Mariner's Guide to Whales In and Around Gitga'at Territory
Gitga'at First Nations territory is home to the highest density of humpback and fin whales along BC's coast and is an important habitat for orca. The Sm'algyax word for orca is Neext. Orca are also an emblem for one of three main Gitga'ata Clans - the Gisbutwada or Blackfish. Orca form a matriarchal society and live in tightly knit family pods, which parallels the social structure of the Gitga'ata. 2024-2025 Annual General Meeting in Hartley Bay
