Community Wildfire Threat Assessment Coming to Hartley Bay: April 19–23

What is a trained Marine Mammal Observer? A Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) is a person trained to spot and identify marine mammals visually. Their primary role is to act as a dedicated observer onboard a vessel and to keep a vigilant watch for marine mammals. Gitga'at First Nations territory is home to the highest density of humpback and fin whales along BC's coast and is an important habitat for orca. The Sm'algyax word for orca is Neext. Orca are also an emblem for one of three main Gitga'ata Clans - the Gisbutwada or Blackfish.
