Over this past year Gitga’at Nation has maintained momentum following a period of significant growth, and achieved consistent progress in many vital areas.

As a reflection of the Nation’s commitment to transparency, accountability, good governance and fulfilling our reporting requirements with Indigenous Services Canada and the First Nations Finance Authority, members have been instrumental in preparing this annual report. Chief and Council would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Gitga’at Membership for their active participation in the Band’s ongoing work.

Gitga’at Nation lay the groundwork for growth in several areas, resulting in improvement now and in the future for health, infrastructure, education, and environmental stewardship.

Strategic investment into health programs have supported overall wellness by advancing access to care with the addition of healthcare professionals and the expansion of important programs, while also providing culturally grounded services.

Infrastructure projects, including public works upgrades and community housing improvements, ensure liveability for members in the community of Hartley Bay, and continual access to the community resources, as well as planning sustainable services and resources for future generations.

Education is the key to our success in the future, and our continual present day progress. It is with immense pride that we see so many Gitga’at members engaged in learning, from local trades training programs and distance education post-secondary studies to language and cultural workshops. Preserving the Sm’algyax language and traditions through education is a vital way to ensure a thriving and strong Gitga’at culture and honour our history and identity.

Moving us closer towards the goal of self-determination and governance, Reconciliation Negotiations have progressed forward this year, with considerable thought and determination from our team and important input from our members.

Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of the Nation’s commitment to maintaining the health of our territory, and we congratulate our Guardians and research teams on another successful year of monitoring and protecting the territory’s lands and waters. From observing local wildlife to preserving the health of our marine ecosystems, their work is essential to protecting the natural resources of the region.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Nation’s accomplishments in 2024 and 2025. We are proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to building on this work in the coming years.

Sincerely, Chief and Council
