Compensation Claims Are Open: Resources for Our Community

The First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Settlement is accepting claims for compensation. We want to make sure everyone in our community who may be eligible knows about it and knows where to get help.

Who can apply right now?

Claims are currently open for two groups.

The Removed Child Class is for First Nations people who were removed from their homes as children. The Removed Child Family Class is for certain family members of those children.

If you're not sure whether you qualify, the Settlement website has an Eligibility Information Tool you can use to check. It isn't a claim form, but it's a good place to start.

You don't have to do this alone

Claims Helpers offer free, one-on-one support that is trauma-informed and culturally safe. They can help you fill out the claim form, figure out what identification you need, and connect you with wellness resources.

Support is available in person, by phone or by video call. You can also call the Administrator at 1-833-852-0755 with questions or to ask for a referral to a Claims Helper.

Materials to read and share

The Settlement's Community Toolkit includes:

  • A booklet on how to submit a claim

  • A flyer about the Removed Child and Removed Child Family Classes

  • A flyer about supports available to claimants

You can view and download everything at the Community Toolkit page: https://fnchildclaims.ca/resources-support/community-toolkit/.

Printed copies can also be requested by mail through the order form on the same page.

For staff and service providers

The Settlement also offers free virtual "Service Provider Training" for community and organization staff. It covers the claim process and claim forms so staff can help members complete their claims.

If you'd like to take part, please let us know or contact the Claims Helpers team at claimshelper@fnchildclaims.ca.

Taking care of yourself

Going through the claims process can bring up difficult memories and emotions. Emotional support and crisis support are free and available any time through Hope for Wellness at 1-855-242-3310 or HopeForWellness.ca.

Children and youth can call Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or text FIRSTNATIONS to 686868.
