Hartley Bay Vessels of Concern

Gitga’at First Nation, in conjunction with Gitga’at Development Corporation, is launching an initiative to identify vessels of concern located in Hartley Bay to support the safety, environmental protection, and long-term sustainability of Hartley Bay Small Harbour.

Community members are asked to identify any Vessels of Concern:

Abandoned Vessel: A vessel that’s owner is unknown or unreachable and the vessel shows clear signs of neglect, prolonged inaction, drifting, taking on water, or lacking current registration.

Wrecked Vessel

A vessel may be considered wrecked if:

·       The vessel appears partially or substantially destroyed

·       It is partially or completely sunk

·       It is lying ashore or grounded

·       It is stranded, in distress, or visibly dilapidated

Abandoned Vessel

A vessel may be considered abandoned if:

·       The owner is unknown, cannot be located, or has expressed intent to abandon the vessel

·       The vessel has remained in the same location for an unusually long period

·       There is no evidence of care or maintenance over a significant period

·       The vessel has drifted or required re-securing by others

·       The vessel is slowly taking on water

·       There is no current registration number displayed
