Rio Tinto has retained Indigenous Canada Solutions Ltd.'s services to facilitate meetings with the First Nations communities within its operating area.

This initiative aims to improve Rio Tinto's relationship with communities like Hartley Bay (Gitga’at). To improve the relationship, Rio Tinto is seeking community members with questions like ‘ “What does Reconciliation mean to you?

The initiative has two phases:

Phase One:

Are community meetings to understand what reconciliation means to the community members? There will be other questions asked like:

  • What can Rio Tinto start doing that will improve the relationship’?

  • What would you like Rio Tinto to stop doing that may hinder the relationship?

  • What would you like Rio Tinto to continue doing, which is working and building the relationship?

  • What things should Rio Tinto do to move the relationship needle?

The information gathered will be incorporated into a document titled “Reconciliation Journey.” Indigenous Canada Solutions will draft and present the document to the communities for their feedback and further input.

Once the communities consider the document final, phase two will commence.

Phase Two:

Rio Tinto will return for the next round of meetings that will primarily and continue to focus on the relationship with the community, where visits will include questions like:

  • What are your priorities, goals, and interests for the community?

  • Where can Rio Tinto specifically support the community?
