The Gitga’at Nation has recently launched a new Cultural Immersion Department. This department is an important step toward reclaiming and strengthening the Gitga’at identity, knowledge, and ways of being.
The work of this new department will be guided by four key pillars: Language, culture, heritage, and community wellness.
Language
Sm’algyax is at the heart of Gitga’at identity. It carries the teachings, stories, and worldviews passed down through generations. The Language pillar supports efforts to revitalize and normalize the use of Sm’algyax for all ages. Some ways to increase language usage include creating new resources, supporting fluent speakers to become teachers, and integrating the language into everyday life.
Culture
Gitga’at culture connects the Nation to its land, values, and history. This pillar aims to revitalize cultural practices such as dancing, singing, carving, and feasting. These programs will support cultural education for youth and adults while helping community members reconnect with Gitga’at traditions and teachings.
Heritage
Gitga’at heritage includes the Nation’s oral histories, art, names, and territory. This pillar is about protecting and sharing traditional knowledge—like canoe making, place names, and Elder stories—so future generations can carry it forward.
Community Wellness
Healing and unity are central to Gitga’at strength. The Community Wellness pillar creates reconnection, support, and collective healing opportunities. The focus is on strengthening family and community ties and ensuring that Gitga’at ways of being thrive in safe, healthy spaces.
