The upcoming month is full of community events in Prince Rupert, many at the Gitga’at Gathering Spirit (632 3rd Ave West). From craft nights and drumming practice to art classes, choir, and more, there’s much to participate in this spring.

Whether you're a member who lives in town or coming from Hartley Bay (or elsewhere), we’d love to see you. Come join in, connect with friends and family, and enjoy these moments that bring the community together. For more details on the events below, please contact Chantal: chantalbolton@hotmail.com.

Wednesdays: Wii Gisigwilgwelk Drumming and Dance

Every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Conrad Gym. Everyone is welcome—no experience needed.

Fridays & Saturdays: Fitness with Jenelle

Move your body and get stronger with Jenelle at 845 Fraser Street every week. Join the fitness sessions on Fridays from 6:30–7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:30–12:30 p.m.

May 31: Elders Lunch

Join us at the Gitga'at Gathering Spirit from 12–2 p.m. for beef barley soup, a sandwich, and time with friends.

June 4 & 8: Harvesting Cedar

There are two days where we will be pulling cedar this year. Members who want to weave a cedar hat will need to attend at least one of these cedar harvesting days. The location of the harvesting depends on where there are viable trees, but the days will start at 10 a.m. Call or message Chantal to sign up.

June 5–7: Formline Art Classes with Stanley Robinson

We’re excited to host three evenings of Formline Art with Stanley Robinson from 6–10 p.m. each night.

Formline is a traditional Northwest Coast art style that tells stories through shapes like ovoids, U-forms, crescents, and trigons. Stanley has worked with youth in Hartley Bay and brings deep knowledge of this visual language.

These classes are sponsored for Hartley Bay members and will occur at the Gitga’at Gathering Spirit. To register, contact Chantal at 250-600-2696. Seating is limited—we’ll confirm the final list closer to the date.

June 10: Picking Tea

We will meet at 4 p.m. to gather ingredients to make tea. More details to come soon, but please connect with Chantal if you would like to get your name on the list.

June 11 & 25: Vest Making

Vest-making workshops started a few weeks ago. Small groups of three members meet at 6 p.m. and work to make special vests for themselves. Get in touch with Chantal to see if there are any upcoming spots available.

June 12 & 19: Choir Night

From 7–9 p.m., come sing your heart out at the Gitga'at Gathering Spirit! No pressure, just fun.

June 13–15: Seafest

One of the biggest events of the year is happening! The 47th year of Seafest takes place over the weekend. We would love to see members from Prince Rupert and Hartley Bay show up for this weekend of fun and community!

June 17: Weaving Headbands

The last headband class starts at 6 p.m. Cecile has done an amazing job teaching small groups of members how to weave cedar into incredible headbands.

June 24 & 27: Coffee Drop-In

Come by the Gitga'at Gathering Spirit between 6–10 p.m. both evenings for coffee and conversation.

June 30: Drop-in Craft Night

This unstructured evening is perfect for working on projects you’ve started but want some company while you complete them. If you have a project in the works, join us at the Gitga’ata Gathering Spirit from 6–8 p.m.

Do You Have an Event Coming Up?

We want to help spread the word! If you’re hosting an event for the Gitga’at community, let the band office know. We’d love to help promote it. See you soon!
