About Kitimat

Kitimat is a community of about 8,000 people located on the northwest coast of British Columbia. The community sits at the head of the Douglas Channel next to the Kitimat River, co-located between salt and fresh water. Four seasons of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and surrounding wilderness provide plenty of opportunity for an active, outdoor, coastal and river lifestyle.

The community was developed in the 1950s to serve the aluminum industry. Over the years forestry and methanol industries were also located here.

The airport is in Terrace, BC, approximately 55 kilometers north of Kitimat. Kitamaat Village is located near Kitimat and is home to about 1,700 Haisla Nation members, living both on and off reserve, who have occupied the land in the area for thousands of years.

We respectfully acknowledge that Kitimat is located on Haisla Nation's traditional territory.
